Mikey Does Dallas
Well that didn't take long.
Michael Ryder inexplicably earned seven million dollars for a two-year contract on the first day of NHL free agency for the summer of 2011. This shouldn't come as a shock to Bruins fans, as there was no chance that the B's would match that offer.
I wrote the other day that Ryder would be worth a look at 2-2.5 million a year but 3.5? See ya later.
The Bruins now don't have to worry about Ryder's contract counting towards the salary cap, giving the Bruins additional spending money should they choose to use it this offseason. With the departure of Ryder and Recchi, the B's will most certainly look towards the free agent market to fill that void.
Ryder will be remembered in Boston as a wildly inconsistent player, a sniper who seemed to choose when he wanted to turn his game up. He was a proven player in the playoffs though, including this year where he scored (8 goals, 9 assists) and played above average defense throughout. His play in the Montreal series, especially his glove save on Gionta endeared him to Bruins fans and may have saved the season. I would've liked to have him back for cheap money but he saw his opportunity to cash in so good for him.
I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Seriously.
